If you notice the flag flying at half staff today it is because it is Peace Officers Memorial Day when the United States pays tribute to local and state peace officers. It was created by Congress in 1961 and President Kennedy signed the bill into law. In a proclamation in 2002, President Bush said,
“Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism.”
The focus of the week of tribute and remembrance is the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D. C.
To those who serve, thank you.
Love,
Mom
