Tolkien Reading Day 2008

Today is Tolkien Reading Day. Here are some of my favorites from the Professor.

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,” he used to say. “You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your fee, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

“I wish the ring had never come to me…I wish none of this had happened.”

“So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

“Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come, when the courage of men fails. When we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields as the age of men comes crashing down. But it is not this day. This day we fight. By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”

Cat

The fat cat on the mat
may seem to dream
of nice mice that suffice
for him, or cream;
but he free, maybe,
walks in thought
unbowed, proud, where loud
roared and fought
his kin, lean and slim
or deep in den
in the East feasted on beasts
and tender men.
The giant lion with iron
claw in paw,
and huge ruthless tooth
in gory jaw;
the pard dark-starred,
fleet upon feet,
that oft soft from aloft
leaps upon his meat
where woods loom in gloom–
far now they be,
fierce and free,
and tamed is he;
but fat cat on the mat
kept as pet
does not forget.

Consider yourselves read to.

Love, Mom

  1. D*mn, I haven’t read Tolkein for decades. I forgot how good it is.

  2. Debbie, then today would be a great day to re read him. I’ll lend you a copy of the trilogy đŸ˜‰
